I run tanks with ugf , rfug and 'normal'.
most have plants in them.
by far the rfug is the easiest to maintain..you do need to run prefilters on the powerheads on the rfug..but there is little mum build up since the water is prefiltered and pushes water thru the gravel.
you do need to rinse the prefilter and the sponges on the hob atleast every two weeks.
on the ugf I run powerheads(marineland 1140)..which also keep the mulm down but vacs do need to be done at water changes..I am contemplating turning these into rfug. if I do I know I will need to do a very heavy deep vac prior to swapping and will most likely run multiple hob at change out time.
my 'normal' tanks are heavily planted and I only do light vacs on these.
