My luck keeping Shrimp sucks. I lost 3 big Triops to a ammonia spike, a Ghost Shrimp to some kind of infection, 2 RCS to unknown causes (deaths were 1 day apart) a freshwater Glass Shrimp to unknown causes (old age?) and most recently one of my Amanos escaped and walked around the house before realizing it couldnt breathe. Im down to 1 Amano.
I love keeping Shrimp as much as I do fish, but I can't help wondering if it's not quite right for me (keeping Shrimp, specifically)
My parents say, "Oh, it's a learning experience." Well if things have to die for me to learn, i don't see the point...
What do you guys think?...

From all I've read- they'd probably do better if you're talking those small numbers of each to go with one species instead of a couple of lots of different ones... they'd be happier- less stressed and more hardy that way.

But it is a learning experience BF! We all had to learn sometime, we all make mistakes or have made mistakes. Fish/shrimp keeping is no different. I just learned my water isn't as hard as it needs to be for some of the sp I keep, I made a mistake and I am correcting it even if I feel like :wall: at the end of the day. I pick myself up and try again. Don't give up :D

If you really like keeping shrimp, keep at it, good or bad. You will learn more from experience. I started keeping shrimp around 2003, and gained alot of "expensive" experience.

I notice you're in New York.

Isn't New York famous for soft water? Supposedly why New York makes good Pizza- soft water needed for good Pizza dough.

Shrimp, from what I've read, don't like soft water.

That depends on the sp of shrimp. But the sp he is having trouble with it might be the water, there are always things we can do to increase hardness though.

If your water is too soft for shrimp and snails, there are rocks or certain types of sand that will make it harder.... and I agree that they would probably be happier in a large group of single species...
