Should I worry?

I do have two pieces of driftwood in there currently. I know the water out here is hard; I don't know if that also means a high kH. I'm just befuddled by the 0-0.25 (apparent) reading on ammonia, that's steady.

Probably your eyes playing tricks on you with the ammonia. It is mostly likely zero. It could be the light in the room appear darker, or you are holding the test tube too close to the color chart (better if you hold about 1cm away), or shadows, or something to that effect.

My advice is don't mess with the pH unless you are willing to buy an RO/DI system. Probably not necessary unless you plan on keeping some super sensitive wild caught species in the near future.

Is there another way to test ammonia without risking harm to my tank? I'm just paranoid now, I think, because I'm aware that ammonia alone is bad, but ammonia with high pH is worse.

I would not mess with the pH either, just do your routine maintenace, your tank should be cycled and barring an electrical outage of some length you tank should not get out of wack.

Having a conditioner like Prime helps if an absolute emergency situation arises.

That being said so long as your tanks are cycled, not overstocked, adequately filtered, and get regular maintenance than a freak ammonia incident isn't likely to occur.
