It's not necessary...IMO but may help if your tap is weird.

Well. It helps to know the water params of your tap water. If the pH/gH is fine than don't use it.

you can always add rockwork to the tank if your pH isnt high enough. plus, more rockwork can help keep aggression low.

Definitely agree with Jpappy,,,we don't use any kind of salt for our Lake Malawi cichlids at all...
