show me a filter that does not move top water

I would think you may be out of luck if you are running HOB. With canisters, you can always extend the discharge and diffuse it.

Have you thought of attaching a media pad or sponge to the HOB output to help soften the discharge?

this is prob ur best and cheapest soulution. I just use a sponge over the return and it slows the water down to a trickle. Get a black sponge so it wont stick out or do wht i used to do and cover the spong with java moss.

I do keep my water up to the top, but after 2 days my plants are once again turned upside down and around the tank. canister? whats a good kind with out paying a fortune, and are they cheaper to keep going then HOB's?

Cute new avatar by the way Granny, when did that change?

that looks like an awsome filter. but I need some info. what part of the media do you change? how often and if ever do you remove the sponges and put new in? or do you just change one part of the media? when you do chage do you have a mini cycle? I also have a extra HOB going in case the media clogs and or finally needs replacing there for avoiding a mini cycle. how does one do it with the rena? also what size would I buy? for my 29 gallon?

For your 29G, I think a XP1 would be perfect - I use one on my 30G. In mine, I use the following media: coarse mechanical filtration pad, fine mechanical filtration pad, micro filtration pad, and a 'bio-chem zorb' that has carbon in it. I replace the micro pad and the bio-chem zorb once a month - the other 2 pads (fine and coarse) I change very rarely, just rinse once every month or two in old tank water (not tap water!). If they are totally falling apart and need replacement, don't change both at the same time, and/or leave the old media in with the new media for a week to seed it.
If I remember correctly, my filter came with at least one if not more of each of those media.

wow and these were as cheap or cheaper then my added HOB's I wish I had known this a year ago. I like how they go under the tank hidden away. I think I will get one, I am impressed with the look and the fact a lot of you here have them. one question, if you change so much media, does it not ever have mini cycles? and whats the cost of the micro pad and the bio-chem zorb? did this all come with it, and is this the standard media used in these?

one more thing, if I buy the FILSTAR XP2 CANISTER FILTER made for up to 75 gallon tanks, would this be over kill? I already have 2 HOB's on my 29 gallon tank.( each rated for 40/60 plus gallons each ) I heard you can never have enough filtration

I forgot I recently had a thread about what media to use for an XP1:
http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=144701

I don't think an Xp2 would be overkill b/c you can adjust the spray bar so there isn't too much flow for a smaller tank and I agree you can't really have too much filtration.
I think what I have is the normal stock because that is what comes with it (I believe one of each of those media is included) but there are plenty of options, and the xp2 has room for an additional media I believe. As you see from the other thread, some people don't use carbon, but I think it cleans the water great, just make sure to remove it if you have to medicate.
I've never had a problem with mini cycles - I don't think the bio chem zorb houses bacteria (I may be wrong) and the micro pad is like a polishing pad, the last part the water goes through, so I believe there is the least amount of bacteria on that, most of it is on the 2 media I don't change. But they have little ceramic things (like I mentioned in above thread) that you can throw in and are supposed to help grow extra bacteria, and you'd never replace those either. However I've never used these.

I believe these may be on my next order of the day for both 55 and 29 gallon tank. thank you Lucy for your input :)
