Hi,

I'm going on vacation for a week and I'm not sure if my shrimp will be ok without feeding. I have cherry shrimp and also ghost shrimp in the same 10g tank. Does anyone know if this will be ok or if I will need some sort of automatic feeder?

I have a bit less than 20 ghost shrimp, and 40+ lots of baby cherry shrimps, if that information helps.

Another question is if my ghost shrimp will turn on my cherry shrimp if they haven't been fed in a long time?

Thanks!

hmm. I would keep the lights on and dump in some fertilizers. let the algae take over, then there'll be lots of food. A big mess to clean up when you get home but they should live.

I would be tempted to ask someone to come feed them every couple of days....this might be a situation where an autofeeder would be useful, although I have heard horror stories of them malfunctioning and dumping all the food and fouling the water, which would be lethal for your shrimp. Does the tank have any moss or plants in it?

Well, if you have plants that are going to provide food, you may be able to get away with a week. I have seen in my invert only tank that they get hyper active after a couple of days without supplementation. That being said, there is no detectable algae in my tank. If you have algae to support them, they may be fine. I have to feed a half algae wafer daily to keep them happy. What is your feeding schedule now?

I feed a quarter algae wafer and one or two hikari crab cuisine things. sometimes I put in a pinch of flakes instead of the hikari.

I got back from my vacation and none have died... I don't think. I can't really tell, but there aren't any bodies and I still have a lot of shrimp, so I guess everything went well :)

Heh, all's well that ends well. If any had died, the rest probably just had fresh seafood.

I've heard of people not feeding their cherry shrimp at all. They often have some leaves in there though, and the shrimp eat both the leaves and the biofilm that grows on them.

Yeah I've heard of that. I was still iffy to try it because every time I throw food in there, the shrimps go crazy! So I didn't know if they were getting enough to eat.
