Hello all!

MY roommate jsut got a shrimp yesterday for her girlfriend, who loves them so much. It's a Valentine's Day present and it's very sweet, but, unfortunately, she didn't do the research before getting it. D:

However, now that I'm helping her look around, it seems there's NO information on caring for these little guys, except for how to 'carefully' hook them as bait or handle with care when cooking them. T_T

After much searching, I believe I have the species, and I found a good picture of it that I lost (someone else was having the same problem I was. However, I closed the tab and can't find the site/forum again. Ugh.). I think it's a M. rosenbergii. He's about 4 inches long with long arms and small claws that are blue-black. The rest of him is tannish, with tawny stripes on his...um...chest? (lol, humans and their comparisons...) that run horizontally in a pretty pattern. He has big black eyes and a spiky ridge that runs kinda likea bridge right between the eyes and points upwars. Maybe all shrimp have that, but I think it's cool. This ridge has black along the spikey things. .. Oh, hey, I found a pic. Here: http://www.jircas.affrc.go.jp/english/publication/annual/1996/divisions/images/fisheries_03.jpg

That's him!

So, that's what he looks like and that much be his species, but here's my main question/concern: How on Earth does Girlfriend and Roommate take care of him? D: I read somewhere out there that they're a lot like crayfish but with slightly different needs - what kind of vague info is that? o_O' I need specifics. It's not my shrimp, but I can't just let him be bought and tossed around without proper care. D:

...by the way, Petland was selling it labeled as a "Prawn Shrimp." Puh-leeeez. I think I'll apply for a job there just to get their information straight. Dx

Looks like a type of macrobranchium species, Im not sure since I never had one. If they're like most shrimp theyre omnivores, eating flakes, algae, detritus left overs. Check out Hikari's shrimp cuisine also. Keep the water around 76 with the usual healthy paramters...shouldn't be hard to care for. Difference is I think they are very predatory, other smaller shrimp/fishes will be harrased and maybe killed. Is it kept all alone in a tank? I'll let people with more macro experience chime in.

Thank you! Yes, I pegged it as a Macro, lol, and it's some kind of prawn. My roomie and I did an online hunt for info and luckily managed to find a little info here or there so we're takin' care of him - or actually HER, according to one site we found. n_n

And yeah it's alone in its tank. n_n

Thank you for you help! :D
