if your tank is in the 67-72 degree range a heater is #1 one the list before any more fish or shrimp. danios need 78-80degree water unless im mistaken...

Danios will not make good tank mates for any shrimp. If you are bound and determined to try shrimp, go with Ghost/feeder shrimp, as you can find them very for around 25 cents, each.

The fish will harass the shrimp, even if they do not try to eat them. Danios tend to actively swim, and search for food. I've had them in tanks, and added shrimp from my invertebrate specific tanks, when they've become over populated, to the tank with the (zebra) danios. They tend to not live nearly as long as they do in my invertebrate specific tanks. The only exception to this are my Macrobrachium shrimp. The danios avoid them.

I keep various species of shrimp, ranging from Neocaradina, Palaemonetes, Caradina, Atyopsis, to Macrobrachium species. The filter feeders (Atyopsis moluccensis) and larger Macrobrachium shrimp are the only ones that don't appear to suffer serious detrimental effects from living with the fast swimming danios.

As always, everyone tends to have different degrees of success or failure.

Good luck.

evelyn i think zebra danios like cooler water they prefer 64-75F water they are cold water lovers if im not mistaken!!!!!

I agree with trying the ghost shrimp first. They are extremely cheap, especially if you buy them at a lfs that sells them for feeders. I know my cherry shrimp prefer cooler water and I don't use a heater in their tank and they do fine. I keep my cherry shrimp with corys, bn and a bunch of endlers and they thrive and reproduce. When one of my small potted plants in another tank starts getting algae on it, I simply put it in the tank with my cherry shrimp and let them take care of the algae and then I put the plant back in the tank it came from.

so should i try shrimp or just scrap this idea entirely??

the feeder ghost shrimp are usally from southern states, like florida. i catch them in my own backyard and its in the fiftys today. but danios do need warmer water, maybe your thinking of white clouds

cam191919- zebra danios can actually be considered coldwater fish. They prefer temps 65-75 F range. But can actually withstand a wide range of temps. They are very hardy fish. That is why they are commonly used to help cycle a tank.

Here are some websites on them you can check out.

To get back on track.... I agree that danios or other fast swimming fish may not be a wise choice for shrimp. But again if you are dead set on having shrimp I would go with the cheap ghost/feeder shrimp. Here are some websites that I found for you on care of ghost shrimp.
