I love the ghost shrimp, and the red cherry shrimp, but will I have to give up my back filters in order to have these? I would love a tank full of ghost shrimp to breed and feed to my chilids. can I use my back filter on my 20 gallon ? if not what type filter do I use? do I have to have a planted tank, I would like to plant the tank with fake plants only and 1 ball of moss .

I recommend looking up breeding shrimp, as some of your questions will be answered easily by looking at a breeding guide.

You can buy sponge prefilters for your filters, to prevent shrimp from being sucked in. Another option is using some nylon material to cover the intake. I believe some people use plain sponge filters on shrimp tanks.

You can have sponge filter or something hooked up to your existing filter so it does not suck the shrimp and kill them. You can have the tank with fake plants.

Shrimp love certain plants.. they love java moss, and they love moss balls. Here's my shrimp tank that I'm so proud of :-D

are mossballs real plants?

They are algae balls!

They are very slow growing (suppose to be 1mm a year, but I think my original two was growing faster than that). Every so often you need to mix them around to create a "rolling" movement that they encounter naturally in stream banks and lakes. If you do that, they should keep their shape. In the wild they are known to grow to about basketball size, but it is more and more rare since a lot of people are going crazy over them. In Japan, they are considered protected and a national treasure. When they are big enough, they will fload in the day while they photosynthesize.
