Trying my hand at breeding shrimp. They are just too much fun to watch and take care of. Here is what I posted about the tanks in Monster Fish Keepers.com:

Setting up some tanks to breed some shrimp (Cherry and Yellow). Plus my current 5g with Cherries and a couple of neons. Going to set up more tanks, when I have some extra money...

Basically, the 10g's have Java Fern and Java Moss (also some extra plant cuttings I got from sploke with the Cherries I got from him). Ed at Tropical Fish Frenzy said the Moss might be Christmas Moss, but we'll see when it grows out. Waiting for a shipment of Marimo Balls. AC20s, 50W Stealths, and Basic t-8 lighting from Home Depot with plant specific bulbs. Driftwood from EvilDead-N-FRNZ (I'll be using the big piece when I can afford a big tank setup).

That's all I can think of for now.

And here is the newest post:

Here are some new pics of the tanks. Went a little overboard on the Marimo Balls. I will be transferring some to the new tanks. Now I have added 3 20g longs, and will be cycling them soon. Just waiting for the equipment to arrive.

Two Cherries have already had babies, and I have two that are currently berried. I only have one Yellow currently berried.

The first pic is of the setup as it is now, plus 3 more tanks I will be cycling soon. The second and third pic is of the Cherry shrimp tank as it is now. The fourth and fifth pic is of the Yellow shrimp tank as it is now. The sixth pic is of my 5 gallon planted before the Cherry shrimp move. It now houses two neons and 1 Male and 1 Female Crowntail Betta (That's what the wife wanted). The seventh pic is of the setup when I started. The eighth pic is of the tank that will house the Cherry shrimp. The nineth pic is of the tank that will house the Yellow shrimp.

Very nice!

Oh man! where did you get all those Marimo balls?

I got them from different places. Looked around and bought/bid on ones that I thought looked good. So far I have not had a bad Marimo, but I have not found a favorite place to buy them from.

Nice tanks too! What is the plant in the back of the 5th picture from the top?

The plant is Hygrophila Corymbosa ver Stricta. AKA Green Temple. I got the original plant from Ed at Fish Frenzy (lfs), and had it in my 5.5g tank. Trimmed some from the 5.5g and tied it to some broken driftwood as a weight.

Really cool, i myself have a cherry shrimp tank which doesnt look half as good as yours. Whats the name of the substrate you have in the shrimp tanks?

In my 5.5g where the Cherry Shrimp were in originally, I am using Eco-Complete. Not a bad substrate, but not as dark as I'd like it.

In the 2 10g tanks, I'm just using ordinary black gravel. Didn't plan on doing rooted plants. The black gravel really made the Cherry Shrimp get really red. However, alot of waste gets in the gravel, which makes for harder cleaning.

In the 3 20g tanks, I'm using Flourite Black Sand. Very dark, which I like. Not really going to do much as far as rooted plants. I will put cuttings from the Green Temples to see if they stick their roots in it. I may also do some dwarf hair grass in the foreground, so this is a better substrate to do it in.

My wife is only letting me buy and setup all these tanks because she thinks they look nice. If they weren't half as good looking as they are, she would tell me to stop wasting my money.

When I lived on the West Coast (1.5 years ago), I did mainly planted tanks. Shrimp and fish where only accessories and cleaner to me then. When we moved to the East Coast, I gave all my stuff to my brother. After about 6 months here, I got an itch to start a new tank, but because we had just bought a house and low on funds, I just got one of those eclipse systems (eclipse 6). That is the 5.5g you see today. Because my wife liked the way it looked when the tank matured, I set up two more tanks, the 2 10g tanks. Though the tanks haven't matured yet (plantwise), my wife liked they way they looked, so I was able to convince her to let me set up more tanks. I will be planting and cycling these 20g long tanks over the Winter, and hopefully getting some different shrimp.

Currently working on a stand for a 65g acrylic tank for the family room. Why acrylic? I fear my 2 year old daughter :grinyes:. Not sure what we will be doing in that tank yet.

As far as the tanks looking good, it's all due to the experience of doing planted tanks. You end up finding out what works and what doesn't, in reference to your tastes. So all you planted tank people, keep on planting.

Thanks for all the complements. :D  :woot:
