Hello.

I caught some shrimp last weekend from the local pond and i've been keeping them in a bare bottom tank with very limited hard decor and no soft decor. I need to switch to sand for the well being of my other fish, and I want to do something for the shrimp.

What do you think I should do to make the 8 shrimp feel better?

Garlic and butter
sorry couldnt resist
I dont have experiance but there often in planted tanks

Plants with lots of bushy foiliage seem to be their favourites... I think it does vary by species... the Neocaridina I have live in the java moss. The ghost shrimp seem to hang out mostly in the star grass... bigger shrimp like bigger leaves I guess.

Assuming you're in the US- I would assume the shrimp species is a Palaemontes or some kind of Macro?

If it's a macrobrachium- you know they'll likely (depending on species) eat any other small inverts in the tank?

All shrimp seem to like java moss and bushy plants. Ghost srimp like to "perch" in top of taller plants and rocks and to have a cave.

I've got a wide variety of plants- and to be honest the ghosts go everywhere- but I see them more often on the star grass than any other plant.

Star grass is not a native plant though so I doubt they have any geneticly programmed preference to that plant- but the size of leaves and bushyness of them is perfect for them to cling to and be partially covered by.

Actually, I live in Australia. Dn't ask me what species they are, I don't know. They have a camel type hump on their backs and are generally transparent. They have a brown organ sack and hav small dots of white/light yellow on them.

Thats as best description I can give you.

I will try java moss. I was going to try that anyway, but now I know. BTW when I caught them they were frequently found on hornwort.
