Shrimp Video

HOLY CRAP! that last one is exactly the same as a shrimp I just bought and I think it was mislabled it was next to a tank of $15 "freshwater prawns" the tank he was in was labled Bamboo shrimp but I don't think it is a bamboo shrimp either. It looked like the "prawns" in the 1st tank but it was mixed in with some Amano shrimp I think. either way they sold me a shrimp that should have been $15 for $5 but I have had the darnedest time finding a picture of it anywhere? what kind did you say it was?

Was it purchased at a chain store? Does it closely resemble any of the following M. assamense?

An image would be appreciated.

Prawn owners - be aware that certain Macrobrachium spp., as adults, can become both highly predatory (to the extent of clearing out tanks housing belligerent Rift Lake cichlids of comparable bulk) and large (as the following images attest):

Nevertheless, most species attain but a fraction of such lengths.

I bought a similar speciman as the one you have, I got lucky and it was rath timid. When I returned it to the store one of the remaining shrimp was munching on a still live clown loach.

Here is what I could get of the shrimp in the third video:

Here are closeups of some of the others who were far less camera-shy:

All of them were purchased for $0.25/piece.

That certainly is a beautiful assortment of Macrobrachium; your first specimen may well be an M. assamense (redclaw shrimp) - quite rare in the U.S. hobby, and easily bred - or a closely allied species. How large are they, and with what sort of fish are you keeping them?

Thanks, all of those pictured are about 2" in length. They're kept with giant danios, sword tails, corydoras, otocynclus, as well as an african butterfly and an L075. I've noticed no piscivorous activity; they eat shrimp pellets, algae tablets, cyclopeeze, and pretty much anything else they pilfer from the fish.

the first picture looks just like mine. sorta stripey red claws ad he is also very shy or I would have put up a picture of him. I wish mine had ony been $.25 I paid a whole $5 for mine.
