Hey guys, I'm sure it's been answered in one of the posts on the 51 pages of posts here, and I'm sorry to offend if so. I do have a question, however. Which do you consider better for a shrimp + tiny fish 10g planted setup? HOB or sponge? I have HOB on there already (with pantyhose covering intake). But, I'm not opposed to getting a sponge filter going, if that's the general consensus.

Thanks, and I look forward to your replies!

There are sponge filters that have like a wheel form that goes into the aquarium and is pumped with one of those fluvals. http://www.kensfish.com/aticompletefilters.html

I do also use the HOB with pantyhose on the filter, stretch it enough that it doesn't ever clog, and shrimplets won't get sucked in but still able to suck in debris.

If you are going to get a sponge make sure it is coarse or it will suck in shrimplets.

I know a lot of people prefer sponge filters in shrimp tanks. I tried it in mine and hated it because it was loud and it just took up too much room in my 5 gallon tank. I got a HOB and put a sponge over the intake and I like it A LOT better. Just my experience.

Another reason I like the sponge, is that it becomes a great feeding spot for the young ones!

Thanks for all the replies, guys! I'm going to try to build my own, but I stink at arts and crafts, so if I can't get it right, I'll just get a sponge filter. :D

I use both. I cut my own sponges and put them over the intakes. I reap the benefits from both HOB and sponge.
