Are they alright on their own in a community tank or do they need to be in larger numbers?

I think they do ok singly, but I have 4 in my 150 and they definitely stick together. I would say if you have the space, go with a few.

I have kept them both ways. But they are neat to watch when they group up :-)

I Love these little guys!! I have 7 of them in my 125 Gall community tank and just like the ones in the picture, they are all buddys and school together, there isn't a lot of algae bloom in this tank so i feed them occasionally with some algae wafers and they love them!

I have 7 in my tank, and they eat anything and everything, including zucchini.

Thanks all. I have either hair or staghorn algae in 2 of my tanks and have been waiting to get some SAE's. Now I know I'll just have to have a few in each. Love the pics you've put up, really looking forward to getting some now. Thanks.
