can anyone settle my mind i purched a tigerfish [datnioides microlepis] yesterday, did do some research as i always do but not sure if this species needs a freshwater setup or brackish.can anyone please let me know the best conditions are. the reason im not sure is because theres a total number of 5 species in this family.im pretty sure its the microlepis because of the number of black bars hes got best regards mick

the datnioides microlepis species is freshwater. Its actually a very big misconception that all datnoids are brackish. I keep 2 datnioides microlepis in with my silver arowana....oddly enough they are great tankmates. They are very docile with other species...they actually follow my arowana all day long. Just remember that this is the largest growing species at 18" so be prepared with a tank ATLEAST 125 gallons or larger.

I had a NNT (North Thailand Tigerfish) It lived in brackish for about 3 years until a bad accedent involving a Neovespicula depressifrons Leaf goblinfish.

The range of my brackish water thoughout the year is 1.005 - 1.018. My NNT was brought in brackish I convert it to fresh and it turned all black and hid. I put it back in my brackish tank and it got its color back and became active.

All tigers can handle brackish water, but the AT (American tiger) Silver Tiger and NGT New Guinea Tiger are more siuted for this habitat and are more likely found in brackish than fresh.

I too had the same problem. I was told to keep it in fresh water by the fish shop I got it from, after a few days I noticed him flickering and rubbing his eye against objects in the tank, so i done some intensive research and found out they are best kept in brackish water 1.10 seems to have done mine fine I've tried to reduce the salt down to nearer fresh water again and the same problems accured and also puffiness of one eye so once again I raised the salt content back up again and he is more happier than ever. He has juat ate my figer 8 puffer.
