Hey i have a 7" Kenyi, he was healthy, I put him in a new 55gal. with a filter off one of my cycled tanks. He seemed ok for 2 days then started shimmying, head up tail down,blood red fins, increased resp.tail and side fins are like they burned off! man! Put him back in the old tank, Treated tank with Maracyn, 5 days.Hes on the fifth day, hes better, but having trouble getting him to eat.Fungus infection, fin rot ? I'm confused. Both tanks pH 8.0, amonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 10, 80 degrees. Any help would be great.
 
Hmmm...wierd. Glad to here he's doing better. Sounds like a classic case of ammonia and/or nitrite poisoning...

What kind of test kit are you using ?

Man coler we have to stop doing this hehehe i was so thinking ammonia burn..

At any rate it sounds like you did the right thing take a photo and post so we can see what you are seeing.. if you are using dip tests you might want to consider liquid tests they will yield a more correct value those dip tests are usually not precise..

I'm using API test kit, liquid, don't know how old. Do the test kits have a shelf life? The Kenyi is even better today. Thanks for the response, I thought amonia or nitrite poisoning too. Does a new tank with an estabished filter, off an old tank, still have to cycle?
 
Yep you may get something of a wee cycle - not as long as a full blown new tank cycle. Basically would depend on how much bacteria came over (so how quickly the old filter went into the new tank, did it dry out etc, did you dechlorinate the water in the new tank) and what bioload was in the old tank versus the new (bearing in mind that you will never get all of the bacteria to transfer from one tank to the other.

I find probably not dechlorinating the new tank water is the biggest cause of problems with a transfer like this.

Oh yeah on the API kit - good choice btw - the bottles have a lot number on 'em the last four digits of which are mm/yy and the test kit is considered good for three years from that date.
 
Man, thanks for the help, I'm going to check the dates on the bottles. I feel I thru him in there too soon, tank didn't mini cycle.Now I'm gona wait, just glad he didn't die!Thanks again.
