I have a mickey mouse platie... atleast it looks like one... kind of... just his whole tail is black and there is no visible mickey mouse.... anyways...

lately all he's been doing is hiding... I have abunch of plants in the far corner of my tank... and he seems to just stay there all the time... and sometimes he hides somewhere that I can't even find him.. and I'm not really sure where he goes.... .... he use to come out and swim around for abit when I fed the fish during the day... but today when I fed the fish he didn't even come out... so I'm not even sure if he ate today or not...

any suggestions on what might be wrong?

Can you give some more info. on the tank? Size, other fish, water test results? How long have you had this fish?

My tank is a 70gallon... I have a mixture of 8 mollies and platies.... 4 rasboras.... 2 dawrf gouramis.... and 1 cory cat...

I've had this one fish for.... over 2weeks now...

I don't have a water testing kit at the moment because I was getting all my testing done at the local pet store... today I did a 25% water change... and the fish still is just staying in the plants... he did how ever come out when I was feeding the fish just awhile ago... but he went right back in the plants after...

I'm thinking that maybe he's just shy?... before I just had the mollies and platies in the tank alone for a week... before I added all the other fish... and he was perfectly fine until about the 2nd or 3rd day that the other fish were put into the tank...

and I havn't noticed any of the other fish picking on him or anything...

i also have platies (two sunset spotted platies) they also favor the densly planted corner ? i don't have any idea why either? they were the first fish that i put in after my tank was done cycling and i didn't have so many plants then. but i got into the aquascaping thing and planted my tank and they became corner dwellers.

Yeah... I'm starting to think that maybe he just does enjoy the corner where all the big plants are... because this evening he was out swimming around... was good to see him out...

i suggest maybe a floating plant, if he stays in the corner for the feeling of safety he should come out more if he feels safe under the floating plant.

Yeah.. I was going to buy one of those last week.. but I was surprised when I saw that my local pet store didn't have any...

Hopefully they'll have something this week when I go back... because their new order of fish stuff come in this week... yay!!

 this morning went I went to turn on the aqaurium light and feed the fish.... the mickey mouse fish was dead floating on the top of the water... :( R.I.P Mickey....

Now.... I've never had a tank where one of my fish died... so, I'm not sure what to do.... the fish looked as if it had no disease.... should I do a water change... how much??...

Also... should I clean out all the plants and other decorations?... like take them out to clean them... should I clean the filter??... Also, should I add salt to the aqaurium just in case for afew days?... How many days should i continue to add the salt if so...

Also.. my one pure black mollie is starting to worry me now too... he seems... depressed, not like himself anymore... should I move him into his own aquarium just to be safe?

you could try and move him into another aquarium and see if he cheers up. it could be that maybe the other fish are stressing him out? also, about the dead fish, just watch your other fish for any sighns of sickness. i wouldn't go for the salt unless you actually spot a problem like ich. most of the time if a fishie just dies then it's probably stress.

Sorry about your loss :(

Platies do well when there are more of their own kind in the tank. I would suggest having 6 or more of them. I had similar experiences with mine when I had only 3. Now have over a dozen white mickeymouse platies that are all happy. I am ready to move on to different fish so they will be going to the LFS soon.
