I had 2 silvertips in a 30gal w/ 2 irridescents, recently one silvertip just randomly showed signs of stress i guess and then died a day later...done know why or how, i ahd them both bought them together at the same time about 3 months ago and they used to both swim around the tank together all the time, after this one died my other one seems to be depressed...either that or is about to die like the other one. Water levels and chemicals are normal, temp is normal, and both irredescents are fine. Why did the first silvertip die, and what should i do about the last one i have. I know he's a community fish so should i get him another silvertip to swim w/? He basically just sits at the bottom of the tank in the corner where one of my airhoses comes into the tank, kinda like a shelter over him, and then eats, swims around the tank once or twice in a few hours, and then goes back to the corner for the remaining time. Whats going on, anything else i should check for or do? Thanks for any info.

Good question....i have a buddy at the LFS that tests it all for me....i usually go once a week and he always says the three are fine....and always says my Ph is 6.8...but no matter what i try i cant get it to 7.0. i guess i should buy a kit and start testing it myself though.

Yes, you really should get your own test kit.... I did the same thing before and learned my lesson from it!... I used to get mine tested weekly at the pet store until a month later when I finally bought my own test kit and found out that the nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia really weren't ok... and for the past few weeks I've been having to do 60-80% water changes DAILY!... and, it's not something I enjoy... but something I have to do..

Anyways, why are you trying to get your pH to be 7.0?

Also, would it be possible for you to take a sample to your local petstore today to get your nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia tested? And ask for them the exact numbers....

I'll be able to get the numbers probably tongiht sometime....and i'll get the kit as soon as i get paid, otherwise, i was trying to get the ph to 7 b/c thats what they told me was average....i gave up about 2 months ago so its been around 6.8 for that long now.

Don't worry about trying to change your pH.... mine right now is 7.6.... that's because I have hard water... but, your pH is fine where it is now.. :) Don't worry about trying to change it
