So I picked up two keyhole cichlids yesterday from a local fish club auction. No one else seemed to want them and I kinda felt sorry for them. They are in a 72g tank along with some green fire tetras (which havent been eaten yet yay!). One of them did really well upon introduction from the get go. ie. swimming and pecking at gravel immediately. The other I thought would not make it since it simply laid there at the bottem sometimes almost on it side. They were both bagged for a very long time 4-5+ hours so I did not have high hopes of the sickly one surviving the night.

Well today both were still around. In fact when I went to feed the tetras they both started feeding as well. However, the sickly one seems to have some sort of swim bladder problem. It does not seem to be able to gain any bouyancy at all. It really has to struggle to get any height from the bottom of the tank, in fact it appears to slide around on the bottom. When it tries to swim up it ends up in the vertical position because the backside seems to be dragging it down. It has no other overt signs of sickness besides this swimming issue and overall lethargy. All other fish are fine and water parameters seem fine (I am using the tetra liquid test kit (would be api but purchased tetra before I found out about it)).

On another note the healthy cichlid seems to peck at the sickly one and the sickly one ends up having to scoot around the bottom alot to avoid the healthy one. Is this normal behaviour? I thought they were supposed to be super peaceful?

Sick fish are commonly picked on even by peaceful ones.

Do you have a spare 10 gallon around to use as a QT tank? If not, I'd try waiting a day or two and see if they fish gets any better...but if it's that sick and still being picked on I'd probably euthanize at that point.

QT??

one good reason..you can keep the new fish protected and allow time to get healthy.

another..keep from spreading pathogens

Well this is a new tank so there aren't really any established fish to QT the new arrivals from besides a couple of tetras....and plants. I do have a 10g to use as a QT with a box filter but I have no heater :(. I might have to go pick one up to separate the two.

Assuming that this is a swim bladder problem only and not a symptom of some other problem are there any remedies besides euthanasia?

seperate and see if you can treat.

you may be able to turn it around.

swim bladder disease is actualy a Sx of a multitude of issues. including damage from aggression. etc.

I agree with star_rider - get a heater and see if the fish improves with good water quality and time. A broad spectrum antibiotic wouldn't hurt, but it may not help at all.

A LFS near me has a jaguar cichlid with a severe swim bladder problem. They have him in a tank by himself (he's about 8" long right now), he's been there that way for 6 months, spends his time on his side on the bottom, but does manage to eat daily.

Obviously, the LFS fish never has improved, but it's hanging in there (nice looking fish, too).
