I just set up my sump 2 days ago. I'm trying to figure out how to make the overflow box quieter. It makes a constant gurgling sound that I can't seem to get rid of. Any ideas how to remedy this?

Thanks,
Dave

What kind of overflow are you using? Is it gurgling at the input or when it hits the sump?

It is as the water is draining from the box hanging on the back of the tank (The one where the "C" tube dumps into from the box inside the tank). There is a prefilter sponge that if I remove it helps some.

I think Ive been having the same problem, the gurgling is air being pulled down into the pipe by the action of the water. Ive been experimenting the last couple of nights and the only solution Ive found is to place a piece of air hose in the down pipe with one end above the water, this allows the air into the pipe and cuts out the gurgle.

The only down side is a slight loss in the amount of water exiting the tank, if your system can take it then should be OK - try it and see.

A small addendum to the above; the air hose still gave off a slight nose which Ive been experimenting to get rid of also. Ive found a neat solution which also seems to help with restoring the flow rate !.

Stick an air pump on the end of the air pipe !! - no noise so far with this set up..... ;)

You know with the recent disaster I had, I really haven't noticed the gurgle sound. Actually, I have been playing with the flow rate and it has seemed to help some.

Go here http://www.rl180reef.com/frames.htm and click on Durso standpipe. Hit the popular mods link then the hangon overflow link. Works extremely well.

Thanks for the link. That's are pretty cool idea and and seems to be a simple DIY. Since it'll only cost a few bucks, I think I might give this a try this weekend.
