Hi,

I have a 15-gallon tall aquarium in my bedroom and my girlfriend figures that it needs bubbles in it. I told her it would be pointless and noisy but for aesthetic reasons she insisted. Anyway I went out and bought a 15” bendable bubble wall and am now looking for the smallest and quietest air pump on the market. Its only purpose will be visual and I would like the least amount of bubbles possible. Since it will be running in the bedroom it must be completely silent. If anyone knows of the make and model of an air pump that fits the bill please let me know.

Thanks,
Plan.

I hear rena air pumps are quiet. Also, you can make it even quieter by other methods.. I'll see if I can rmember some...
I think if you get a jar like a mayo jar or somethign similar and put the pump in and surround it with cat litter that works. you might want to put it inside of a sock or something to keep dust from getting inside. you can also put a silencer in-line. You take another jar(small) and poke two holes in the lid just big enough to slide the tubing in, and one of the pieces of tubing goes to the tank and one goes to the air pump. I have never owned one, but some people say rena's are totally quiet. If you got a rena and put it in the mayo jar silencer thing it'd probably be very quiet.

hope that works for ya

i think the bubbles are noisier than any of the better made pumps. i like tetratecs or renas. its them vibrating that makes the noise so i rubberband it to a sponge, or wrap it up a towel but that might make it overheat. and make sure the airline dosent vibrate either.

I put a piece of 1/2 inch filter floss under my old Whisper pump, and it makes less noise than the airstones or wet/dry filters that I use. However a easier way to silence the air pump would be to get a piece of extremely long air hose (Wal-Mart sells 25' lengths for not a lot of $$$) and put the air pump in a different room.

Rena air pumps have been very quiet and reliable.

Here's a look at them from one website: Rena Air Pumps

A silent air pump is a contradiction in terms - they are 60-cycle vibrators, so make noise on their own, and the bubbles are noisy as well.

I'd have to agree with this comment, I have never even met a quiet ar pump let alone a silent one. I gave up on them years ago.

I have a Rena and it's very quiet. Comparitivly it isn't the cheapest on the market though. I would recommend putting your pump on a soft surface like a sponge, towel, or as suggested, filter floss. Some pumps have an adjustable output so you can increase or decrease your bubble rate...either that or use a flow valve to the same effect.

I agree with that. The last time I used one I got a motar driven one that I could use on multiple tanks, made it sypon proff and kept it in the basement.

Rena air pumps suck. Bought two and after 6 months craped out. Got two Tetratec DW96-2 and they are so much quieitier. Got a luft to but it is a little noisey but reliable.
