Silly Rasboras

So, every now and then I need to top off the water in my tank (which has rasboras, neons and otos). As it's just a 10g, I do this with a cup. And my silly little rasboras love being where the water is poured in! As I don't want to "hit" them with the water, I have to pour a little bit slowly on one side, then when they all come over, I quickly pour some into the other and they come rushing, so it's back to the other side for a slow pour and then back to the other for a quick dump before they get there!

At first I thought this was just a fluke, but this happens every time I top off the water. And then there's the fact that sometimes I use a canister filter to "polish" the water a bit, and when I first start it up, I slowly increase the flow (the fish all scatter when I put the intake tube in, so they're far enough away for the current not to bother them (and I watch to be sure they're not close and I aim the output at the glass to help reduce it)). Anyway, once the filter's going, I reduce the flow to something I'm not worried about, but those silly rasboras will come up before I get the output slowed down and get closer and closer, swimming in the current - they love it - they wait there for me to turn it up (a little) and just swim their little hearts out, getting as close as they dare to the output! It's like they're surfing or something. Sometimes it's like they're playing a game - who can touch the output tube, or who can escape the input!

Just wanted to share the story of my silly surfing rasboras!

when I try to get pics of my tank my fish go to the back of the tank and all the pleco's drop from where they are and stick to the front glass, make picture taking difficult, they like to be photogenic!

I have a school of 12 black neon tetras that will follow the rotating output on my powerhead as well as "surf" the spray bar from my canister filter.

I also have a pearl gourami that likes to sit in the gravel cleaner end of my python while it siphons water out of the tank.

Ha! Mine just see stuff floating up the tube and think it's food and swim around trying to figure out how to get to it. (Although I do have an oto who holds his own when the gravel vacuum gets close - I have to get right up next to him before he'll give up his post and let me vacuum whatever might be left of the algae wafer!)

Aren't fish fun!?

It's funny for me to read this thread because I have often wondered about rasboras and this behavior since getting some a few months ago. :)

I've got three of them in my 55 gal which has two AquaClear 200's on it. They absolutely love swimming in the current! Sometimes they will go through it back-and-forth (side-to-side) and love the little 'dip' they get as they pass through. Other times they will jump into the current and swim directly into it as hard as they can. :) Makes my and the family crack up.

I never knew fish could be so playful until I saw them doing this alot. This behavior guaranties that I will always have some of these little guys in my display tank!

Thanks for your reply t-bone - I wondered if it was rasboras in general or if I just had some nuts <g> Now that you mention it, mine sometimes pace in front of the filters too (don't generally swim into the flow - probably not strong enough - but they like going across it.

Anywho, I'd recommend these little guys to anyone - they're just too fun.
