i have 2 silverdollars and i wanted to know if they will live with neon tetras and other community fish? if not what could my silver dollars live with?
silver $'s are pretty aggressive fish. What they'll live with really depends on a lot of factors... size of the fish, size of the tank, decorations (read: hiding spots), how old they are when you put them together etc. I'd say that silver $'s will eat most kinds of tetras though. General rule of thumb... if a fish can get another fish into it's mouth it'll try to eat it.
Good tankmates for silver $'s would be other aggressive fish like barbs. They're also quite tough on plants if you ever wanted to get into that. They grow huge as well so you'll need to house them in a larger sized tank. Remember to stock your tank not with how big the fish are, but how big they will become.
You'll see in my sig below what I have in my 125g. I don't know how big your tank is, but I read that silver dollars prefer to be in schools of 5 or 6. Don't know if you have the room for that, but mine are very happy and active in the group they're in.
in my 75 gallon i have two silver dollars that live fine with the two long skirted tetras, the red eye tetra (which is pretty small) and another yet to be identified fish that looks kind of like a minnow. But they also has the two big balas and an angel fish to keep them occupied. Ive also noticed that the silver $'s stick pretty much with each other and dont give any of the others any trouble.
Thats not true Silver $'s are very peaceful fish.
They dont try and eat tetras when there small b'cause i have 2 in a community tank and all they do is eat the plants, never had no trouble with mine.
my girlfreinds dad has a pair of breeding silver dollars in his 55 gallon, he also has 2 angel fish, a betta, a bala shark, and 3 little yellow fish. and they all get along great, although i must say the silver dollars are very horny fish, they mate every night! :thud:
I have 2 Silver Dollars in a 30 gallon tank, and they are about 4" in diameter. I have them with 1 clown loach, 1 red tail loach, and 1 pleco. All of them except the pleco seem to school together, eat together, and don't seem very agressive towards the other fish.
