silverfish?

This little critter in your aquarium should be nurtured. Let us know what, if anything, it grows into. Maybe it's an alien!!
I think you may have misinterpreted what you saw. Yes, they will get into the drain. Your drain is not always full of water and if you look inside you will see holes leading here and there. Your drain could even have holes leading to the floorboards of the house.Marinemom said:

you ARE mistaken. you know what you THINK you saw but trust me, it's simply not possible. any more than saying you saw a guy living in your pool .. as in breating under water. not possible right? humans do not have gills, right? so if you saw a human under water you'd have to assume he had an airline or an aqualung hidden somewhere that you did not see. it's physically, biologically, impossible for a silverfish to live IN the water. it has no way to breath under water.
they live in damp places. they're often seen coming out of a drain in your sink or such place. what you didn't see was him crawling in there in the first place. the drainpipe under your sink is empty from the actual drain mechanism in the sink itself, down to the 'S' curved trap. the 'trap' holds water on purpose. this prevents sewage gasses from getting up into your house. any and all 'grey water' pipes in your house have a 'trap'. silver fish crawl down into your drain pipe because it's 'damp'.
you need to do some research and stop being so positive about something which is just not possible.
One of the less insidious yet still problematic qualities of these pests is that they eat cotton--generally the t-shirts and other cotton clothing that gets dropped on the floor or is in a loose-woven hamper. Ever notice those itty-bitty holes that you just couldn't figure out? Silver fish. (I studied textiles for years, and have tracked this behaviour as well.) So, it ain't enough we got moths???? Nothing's safe except synthetics, but they melt really nice. :thud:
liv2pad- you sound angry or hostile. That is not needed on this forum. And do not tell me what I need to or not need to do! I believe I said that I WOULD'T OF BELIEVED IT IF I DID NOT SEE IT WITH MY OWN EYES. Explain how with more than 2 inches of standing water with nowhere to drain- there thet were just as happy as could be. Hence the rotted subfloor and flooring that was underneath our tub making unsafe conditions for us and if it fell through we would have been in the furnace room. I had pictures of this but they have been buried somewhere in this house for the better part of twelve years. We needed them for the insurance company so the damage would be covered.Now I would appreciate it if you would not flame me.

i'm not angry and i'm not hostile. i'm just exasperated with trying to help you understand a biological fact, and such a simple one at that ... silverfish are not biologically equipped to breath under water. can they hold their breath and crawl through water for 15 seconds? sure. can they live under water? NO ... that's just the way god made them. you'd probably tell me you saw a guy in a pool and thus, man can breath under water. all things found in water do not live there. they may be simply "passing through" so to speak. ducks swim on water but they cannot breath under water. fish swim in water but they cannot breath on land. these are some truths of life and you're trying to believe otherwise doesn't make them so.
