Simple DIY rock wall and cave for 5 gallon hex

It's pretty much up and running now. I had a bad experience getting my red cherry shrimp (they all got cooked by a malfunctioning heat pack during transit). Otherwise, it's running well. I have a couple of the frogs, who seem to be doing well, and four ghost shrimp, which get ignored by the frogs for the most part. I also have a honey sunset gourami for my centerpiece fish.

I had horrible cloudy water for a long time, but when my plants finally came in, it cleared up in a matter of a day or two. Woo hoo! I love planted aquariums :)

How awesome is that? I love it! Now I want to convert my 5 gallon to look like that...too bad I'm using it as a QT tank for my sick platies :(

Hope you get some more cherries soon, the uncooked kind. :D

I tried a powder blue dwarf gourami...twice. When I bought the first one, they fished out the most perfectly shaped and colored one I've ever seen...and when they put it in the bag, it had popeye, so they took it out and gave me the other one they had. It was kind of sitting on the gravel. It died very quick, so I took it back and got a new one from the fresh delivery. It seemed fine, but after two weeks developed a large sore on it's face. I tried medicating it, and it seemed to be doing better, and then suddenly had a fit and died. From what I've been able to determine, dwarf gouramis, powder blues in particular is seems, have some sort of genetic weaknesses. I wanted a gourami for the tank, but didn't want to perpetuate the problems associated with them.

Doing some research, I found that the honey sunsets are apparently gouarmis, not dwarf gouramis. I can't find any mention of them being as sickly as the dwarf gouramis apparently are. Also, for some reason, the honey sunsets apparently stay smaller than dwarf gouramis, which is actually a better fit for the tank. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with him so far.

Your tank looks awesome. I really like the rock work. I have found that the dwarf gouramis that we get in at work have been a little more hardy then the stock we were getting a few months ago. But over all I've had less problem with the honey sunset gouarmis.

I've also had that experience with a Powder Blue Dwarf Gourami. I had the honey like you have for a year before he got dropsy and died. I had the Powder Blue and he got a sore on his mouth. I separated him & he died that night.

I'm glad to hear it. Where do you work katschamne?

I know everyone hates Petco but that where I work. Most Petcos get their stock from local suppliers when possible. There are times we get fish in from a different supplier if the company is having a sale. Then they are shipped in.
