yeah that would work i just blasted all the potting mix out of roots with the hose and potted it in the gravel.
If you have a heavily stocked tank and good light there are plants that will do a better job at purifying water than spathiphyllum- impaitens would be my choice as they have masses of fine roots, they grow super fast under the right conditions and they are easy to prune

rtr 2 dozen tanks!! where do you find the time? do you raise fish for a living?
 
so can somone write a list of the plants that will work nice with this kind of setup? i want to put some in my vivarium and in my HOBs
 
Here are some of the best:
Cyperus papyrus dwarf papyrus
Chamaedorea elegans parlour palm(needs clean moving water if its roots are submerged)
Cyperus alternifolius Umbrella Plant
Ophiopogon japonicus mondo grass
all are attractive and not to vigorous
you could also try smaller philodendrons
also Coleus and Impatiens(very fast growing)

(note to self- dont even think about owning puffers)
 
Thanks for posting the list (and your original project) this thread is inspiring and informative. One question. What constitutes clean moving water? Does it mean that a filter is running so there is *some* water circulation in the tank or are we talking powerhead directed towards the roots of the plant?
 
moving in that water flows around the roots. alot of plants will grow with their roots in clean moving water that are not bog plants.
What sort of setup have you got and what are you planning on doing?
 
Right now I have a 36"Lx12"Wx20"H tank that is currently filled to about 9" high with 6 Corydoras aeneus and some submerged Java Moss and Java Fern. What I would like to do is just add a few areas of piled rocks and gravel where I can hide a few plant pots that will support some emersed plants and perhaps some Java Moss. Filtration is via a Filstar XP2 so i have some discretion in where I can direct the spray bar or the power jet for circulation. Also, at this time I only have one 20watt bulb over the tank so I'm limited to low-light plants.
 
I'v seen that site before but still a good post for anyone checking out this thread and looking for more info.
