Single Boseman Rainbow and Pristilla Tetras. Stress? Agression?

The worse is yet to come, she's insisting that her Parents will take our two year old out next month(when they visit from out of town) and pick out two fish. She doesn't want me to restrict their choice in ANY way. I have this fear of them coming back with a Discus or a African Cichlid or two... money is not an issue with them. I'm going to have to sneak my father in law a list of "approved" fish.

grrrr  lol...
if i were in your situation, id be having a headache right now

good luck with whatever happens

what would you do if they came home with a snakehead lol :thud:

As I said in answer to your private message, you do not have the room in that tank to run "several schools" of rainbowfish. One school, yes, no more than that.

Again I caution you against tiger barbs. They are nippy and aggressive unless they are in large packs and even then aggressive behavior may not be curtailed. They don't belong with rainbowfish or tetras.

Your tetras may be doing better now, but that will decline as you add more rainbowfish.

Good luck with your tank.

Thanks for your input, but I did not ask how to stock my tank, I asked about the behavior of the tetras when interacting with Rainbows.

Still, I have to comment:
At this time, these fish are all less than 2" long, and as I understand it, they aren't the fastest growers, if i wanted 6 Praeox and 5 Boseman, at those sizes, that's about 9" of Praeox and 10" of Boseman.. that's just 19" of fish. With they grow? Yes, but how much? I've seen estimates on size of these fish that very. Praeox between 2-2.5", Boseman between 3-5". So total full grown size could be between 27-40" of fish. at 13" for the who schools.. that's variation is almost 22% of estimated tank space!

I'm not going to base my tank on how big the fish MIGHT get. It would take at least a year for some of these guys to reach max size, and it probably won't be fully stocked for 3-6 months anyway. That's a lot of time. If they get too big, or things get too crowded, I accomodate by moving them to another tank, or buy a new one. It's amazing how flexible this hobby can be. And what's best about it is that we all have our own ways of exploring the it! The point is to enjoy it!

How the fish interact is also dependant on how the tank is stocked and how much the tank is stocked. You cannot base your tank stocking on "inches of fish". The sizes I quoted you are ACTUAL sizes, okay? I have 8 month old Boesemani that are 3.5" in size. They *will* go to 5 inches easy.

As for the rest of your post -- do what you want. I have told you what will happen with the rainbowfish. It's one subject I know very well. I've studied them in depth and I have *several* tanks full of them.

Frankly, if you don't want to take advice, please don't ask for advice.

Thanks to all those that answered my request for advice concerning on TETRA BEHAVIOR WITH RAINBOWS in the tank.(I think that's the topic). I think all this is going to work out. The tetras are coming out more now... I think they were just a little skittish at first, they're still not swimming all over, but they're getting more adventurous.

I'm going to work with the Father in Law to get the fish that will work in our tanks. This is NOT our only tank.
It's going to be fun to see how all this works out. I can watch these guys for hours. My productivity has gone down to zero watching these guys.

I had 5 pristellas, see sig...I added a couple more last weekend and although one of them didnt make it thru the night, the addition seemed to brighten them up immensly. They are more active and their yellow & black fins have colored up much more brightly. Maybe if you add a couple more pristellas they will be braver. I know it helped mine.

I've got lots of lighting because I want a planted tank... The Rainbows don't care, but they don't swim too close to the light, they like to stay midway down. I've got 4 28w t5 bulbs!
Nah, I've got pristellas under 6*54w T5s.

It's about how big the fish WILL get.

I don't. Enough said.

Ya know, Roan and others are just trying to prevent you from making stocking mistakes. I wound up moving my pristellas, red eye tetras, and bleeding hearts out of the tank that houses my rainbows for a variety of reasons, and stocking mistakes was one of them. The other thing is that fish given the proper environment and nutrition will grow and will hit their max sizes easily and sometimes even surpass them. Pristellas are supposed to max out at about 1 1/2 inches, well 3 of mine are as big as my red eye tetras which are pretty big... I have had the pristellas about 6 months. My rainbows are growing by leaps and bounds and I've had most of them only about 4 months.
Take care,
Mary.

My Boesemani's doing the same thing, terrorising his buddies the Rummy Nose Tetras. I'm going to put the Tetra's in their own tank.

mduros, my fish have grown by leaps and bounds too. It must be the diet of; frozen hikari blood worms and brine shrimp. Not to mention mushed frozen peas and cucumbers and hikari algea discs. I have three tanks two pictus, two neon blue guarmi's, two common pleco's (male and female), three rummy nose tetra's, and three clown loaches. All of the fish I bought were tiny when I first bought them, now they're huge. I've had them all for a little over two years. I moved the whole lot of them from Cheyenne WY to Southern New Mexico. I had a truck load of 10 gal water buckets some with fish, others with plants and just water to fill the tanks back up with safe cycled water.
