sinking driftwood...

do you add de chlor to your sink tubs? wondering if using tap water would leach chorine/mine INTO the wood over time?

I screwed 3 suction cups (79 cents a pack of 4 at wally-world) to the bottom of mine and stuck it to the bottom of the aquarium. The substrate covers the suction cups so the driftwood looks like it is just sitting there.

Preparing driftwood can be a long process. Best just to let it soak in a place where you will forget about it for a month or 2. I've got 3 big pieces soaking in an unused 55 gal that I'll probably do something with in June.

I used some big rubber bands looped together to restrain my driftwood to a big rock. It kinda floats but is held in place. It's been a month at least and it shows no signs of sinking yet. How long can it take?? I'm seeing 2 months?? Maybe longer? Agh!

You shouldn't have to. Chlorine will gass off within 24hrs. Even if chloramine is used, there won't be enough trapped in the wood to cause any problems.

This is useful for a new set up, but if you are trying to add a decor to an existing tank, it's really difficult and almost impossible to clean the glass perfectly so the suction cups hold still. I tried it in a sand bottomed tank. :(

well with my wood it was too big to boil, so i soaked it in bleach for 2 days, and then in water for a month, changing the water every few days. STILL wouldnt sink.SO i siliconed rocks to the bottom and kerplunk. still leaked air for over a month after that.

BLEACH!? ack! i hope that it was very dilute! i cant imagine the damage that could cause if it soaked into the wood!

but if all went well...

Drifting sinkwood...thats how I read the title of this thread. :p:
