Siphon Recommendations

Yes the python is very good.

Just a few recommendations:
1) Get the brass faucet adapter. They give you a white plastic one that is easy to strip the threads on. All my faucets are at odd angles and the threads were filled with hard water build up since they are old.
2) Make sure you sink drains well. You might test it by turning the water on all they way and it shouldn't overflow. If its plugged up, you should fix it before using the python system. I'm sure you don't want your fish water to overflow. It can suck water very quickly depending on how high the faucet is on and how much pressure you have.

If you get the python siphon, you should be able to change the water in less than half the time. Its always a pain to start the regular siphon going.

I just got my python last week and love it. Turns out it's been upgraded and now comes with the brass adapter! No extra cost. I got mine at petco.com (had a gift card I needed to use...) and was really surprised. I'm not sure whether other places carry the improved version, though.

I ordered mine from Big Al's and it too had the upgrade. This was back in December.
 
I've got to come up with some way to make water changes easier on myself. I'm currently doing the old fashioned bucket method. It wasn't bad with just two tanks, but now that I'm getting more and more tanks it's becoming a hassle to do my every other day water changes. The python would work great, except that I have to let my water sit at least 24 hours. I currently use a couple of rubbermaid tubs for this, but it's not enough anymore. I need a big reservoir, but the only place I could keep it would be the basement. So - I'd need probably 75 feet of tubing or more, a powerful pump, and some way to shut it off remotely. Anyone have some good ideas on how to make it work?
 
I agree that the Python makes it much easier. To make it even easier, put the draining end of the python into a drain, bathtup, toilet, out the window,anything that is lower than the tank, and once the syphon starts (a quick suck on the hose-don't worry, you won't get any water in your mouth, the water just needs to get over the top of the tank), and then the syphon will continue. Try it, it is much easier and does not waste any water.

Aqualung- Have you considered a holding tank underneath your tank, and then just pump up from the holding tank under the fish tank to the fish tank. If you need more water than you could hold underneath, just put a ball valve or shut off on the end and you will not need the remote shutoff. Just turn the ball valve, and then shut down the pump. You wouldn't have Discus, would you?
 
jdellman - Nope, I don't have any discus. I just like my fish to get as much fresh water as possible. I don't really have enough room under my stands to hold a reservoir, although it just occurred to me that I MIGHT be able to fit one in the closet so I could avoid having to pump it up from the basement. If I put a shutoff on the end of the hose, wouldn't pressure build up pretty quick? I don't know much about pumps, I've never had the need for one before.
 
I have not tried the shut-off with a pump in the basement, but I was looking into doing the same thing as you, and I read many posts from people that were doing it without a problem, and one that was even pumping up to the second story. I do have a shut off on the pump from the holding tank, and do not have a problem when I shut the valve off with the pump running.

I got mine from PetsMart back in July, and it had the brass adapter back then too.... so it's been a while :)
