Skimmer Problems

I too have a SeaClone Skimmer and I am currently trying to do some modifications on it. I think I have a newer model because the small innermost tube is about 4" in length. I hear you can cut this to 3" inches but that will be my last step because it is so difficult to get that tube out for cutting.

Actually what I need to know is how to properly do the modifications. Last night I drilled a small hole in the top cover of the collection cup. Thru this I sent air tube line. I put an air stone on the one end and sent it all the way to the very bottom of the skimmer thru the small innermost tube. Is this the proper way to do this? Why do people say to use only a wood air diffuser and not the stone ones- will it make a difference?

As for the other mods of removing the innermost tube- exactly how does one do that? Can you remove the intermediate tube from the skimmer? To me it appears that the intermediate tube is not removable because it would require you to crack/break the black rim at the top of the large tube. And I don’t have pliers or anything that can reach all the way to where the innermost tube is located. Even if I were to get it out how would you get it back in? I need some details on how to do all of this. I am just trying to get everything to work properly.

You want to use a limewood airstone because the bubbles that they produce are considerably smaller than that of a stone.

As for your mod question -

Ive already done this procedure to my seaclone and it yielded abouta week of watered down skimmate. First i hacked down the collection cup tube about an inch and a half with a dremel. I drilled a hole in the cap of the cup and ran a limewood airstone down 3/4 of the way down the length of the reaction chamber with a rigid air line. The tricky part was the chopping down of the inner tube. For that i had to buy an extension for my dremel (cuz it was skinny enough to fit into the tube) and i had to get my girlfriend to do it because my hand wouldnt fit into the tube either.

I wish u luck- if you have a dremel or access to one I would say what the hell go for it because your seaclone will more than likely do nothing but take up space in your closet anyways - if you don't however i would just pool your money and get a real skimmer.
