Hey gang - I need some help...

I am running a sump-style skimmer in my tank. It has adjustable airflow (obviously) and the ability to restrict water outflows - not the intake on the pump however.

Here's the problem - no matter how I adjust it, the darn thing is always overfowing within 1 day - all clear as well. The discharge line is free of obstructions, so there is ample water flow. The only thing I notice is it happens quicker if I add buffer or calcium to the system. Any thoughts on how to get this to work right?

Have you added a lot of live rock or other source of organics recently? My Euroreef produced way too much clear skimmate right after I added a bunch of live rock and sand. It calmed down in a few days. Otherwise, I would have suggested to open the airflow and water outflow all the way, which you have probably already tried.

Adding food or additives changes the surface tension of the bubbles, so that's probably why it gets worse when you add Ca or alk supplements.

Dave,
Thanks for the help. Yes - the skimmer is running wide-open - both air and water flow. The tank has been set up for about 1 month now. 60% of the rock is cured (from my old tank) and the balance is new. Do you think it would help to turn the skimmer off for a week or so? It has never produced any dark waste - only clear.

Thanks,

Jon

You might try leaving it off for a day or so. A week seems like a long time to wait for things to settled down, but that may work. Is there any way of contacting the manufacturer for hints?

Are you sure you have adjusted and restricted the airflow into the power head? My overflow problems from my skimmer occured simply because I was missing the proper 99 cent plastic piece which allows you to restrict the airflow to a minimum.

The problem is worse if I restrict the airflow for some reason. I ran it all day yesterday and it was fine, however, overnight it filled up again. I am going to try shutting it down for a day or so and see what happens. I am also going to try calling the manufacturer to see what is up.
