Skimming

Thanks for the reply. Based upon the early responses I am not going to change (reduce) my usage from 24/7 to something less. I had read some articles which recommended otherwise, which was the impetus for my post.
IMO it is more to do with the brand skimmer you have + size of the tank it is on. Since my skimmer is under rated for my tank I feel I must run it 24/7, but say if I had a Bubble King skimmer on my tank I could probably just run it 1 hour a day after feedings and it would do the same as my current skimmer.
i have 2 reef tanks one is a 40 the other a 29. the 40 has mechanical (emperor 350) as well as a nice size skimmer pluss a small powerhead for extra flow crossways and i run it all 24/7 except for the rare times one of my animals unplugs it all!(yep im thankfull its rare lol) on the 29 i have the same emperor 350 hob pluss a smaller hob with no skimmer at all. theres not alot of rock just a single large peice and a bunch of small ones i have frags on most of them, all soft corals. both tanks are doing well, but i have more growth in the tank with the skimmer so far but that is some due to lack of a moonlight in the 29 i think. just my 2 $ents lol

Moonlight = 0 effect on your tank.. I know the moonlights were made for lizard's and helping them breed.. And when I used them on my fish tank it was only for a safe way to see in the thing at night..
I also use my skimmer 24/7 and yes if you have a huge skimmer then you could be ripping good stuff out of the tank but then again all that stuff should be replaced with water changes anyways..
