I recently got a bunch of black slate from a friend and i wanted to make some caves out of the pieces. Is there any kind of black silicone that i can use to bond the pieces together?

Also if anyone has any pictures of tanks with slate being used please post pictures so i can get some ideas :)

I am not sure how well silicone will hold them together, but you can use clear aquarium silicone, it is safe for your fish.

Normally when making caves with slate yu stack the pieces in such a way that it makes a cave. I don't know how big your pieces are. But whichever route you want to go is you're own preference. I think that if you use the aquarium sealent glue, or aquarium expoxy you will be fine. I would just try and put the glue in a less noticeable spot. Just a thought, mybe someone else will have a comment on this, couldn't you use regular aquarium sealant and mix in black food coloring? This would give you what you want, and I don't see how or why the food coloring would hurt the fish.

I don't bother with silicone and slate caves, no matter the shape nor size. Frankly, I like to leave it well open on two sides at least, or three if larger. The fish seem to appreciate having a den with plenty of exits, and the increased water flow not being blocked from silicone can't hurt things either.

Here was a 110gXH with about 240 lbs of slate stacked by feeling what sat properly without rocking too much, and a bit of counterbalancing where needed. Just an acclimation tank for new arrivals. For scale, the large white angelfish is about 3.5x4 inches for the body minus finnage.
