I want to get some rock for my tank and have located a slate quarry that will send me some pieces. I like the colour and texture. Has anyone had expierience of using slate and /or buying from a quarry. I live too far away to visit and choose for myself.

Ive used slate in my tanks and love the look of it if its stacked right. It wont do any harm on the chemistry of your water, just make sure you give it a rinse first. Also, try to smooth out any sharp peices because slate and shale can break and form sharp edges.

Ive never bought from a quarry though, but i dont see anything wrong with it.

If anything, I think quarry stone would be less likely to have fertilizer or pesticide on it, compared to stuff you get at a landscape/garden store or nursery.

There may or may not be a problem with that. Can you trust them to send you slate that will look good in your aquarium, or will they send you any crap they pick up from the pile? I would really want to pick it out myself.

Just my $.02

whts really nice about slate is you can create your own peices with the peices you recieve just ask them to ship you larger peices ..then you can break or even cut (yes, i have mine cut...dremels work great ,,just be sure to use eye protectant) i also use a new scrub brush to lightly srub them before i use them in my tanks ..coming from a quarry this would be something i would recomend ...sometimes the dust doesn't rinse off...and i stack them so there are a million tiny cave and all day long you can whatch the fish dart in and out of the structure...its neat because its a natural color and it compliments the brightness o my cichlids! good luck!

whoops sorry I posted twice ...what I meant to say is...

thanks for all your ideas I'm, really excited about getting some now!

Whether your slate was purchased at a garden center, landscaping outfitter, home improvement store, or pet store, it all originally came from a quarry. Why not cut out the middle men?

Buying from a quarry is the best deal you'll get. I use granite in my tank and I got 30 pounds for $3.20.

And generally having it shipped to you costs a lot more than the rock. The local landscape suply store (quarry) charges $90 an hour to have things delivered.

slate debate

I have now picked up two pieces of slate 3" x 4" x 15" the staff let me have it for free!

I had fun smashing up the pieces wih a hammer and then bought some aquatic sealant. I have laid the pieces on top of each oather and have made tank ornaments with so so many caves (that should keep the fish happy and get the Ph up for cichlids).

Actually, while slate makes nice caves, it won't affect pH...
