I bought 2 pieces of "natural rock" slate tile from Home Depot. It was the only thing close to rock they had in the store. there were some slate bricks in the garden area but they were ugly.

We played smashy smashy a bit, which was fun.

It doesn't react to vinegar, and a piece is in a bowl of water to see if it affects pH or turns colours....

Is this safe? Seems safe. Seems like we're doing the right steps to ensure it is safe, we will also boil the rock thoroughly before placing it in the tank.

Any other tests or ideas?

True slate is very stable and is recommended for just about any aquarium application.

What you're doing is overkill, slate rinses easy and can be usually dropped right in (unless it is used roofing slate that has tar attached or other issues) but the fact you care enough to take those extra steps is great.

Okay, I am going to leave it overnight anyhow. There are brown spots on the slate.. is this rust or iron oxide? or just dirt?
some of the pieces on the inside have brown bits...

Also, if this doesn't work out I heard using a piece of purple string on your rock gives it madonna-esque kaballah powers which make your fish hyperintelligent and tonedeaf. is this true?

probably iron oxide. I wouldn't worry about it.

Hyperintelligence is to be expected. them being tonedeaf is an unexpected, yet pleasent side effect.
