Slew of Questions (Cycling, Stocking, and Care)

If you don't want your gourami pestered, stay away from angels, serpaes, and skirt tetras. You can probably get away with a couple rams, if you want some more fish with personality, since they're not aggressive unless they're spawning, and even then, they're less aggressive than larger cichlids tend to be. Depending on where you want activity rasbora hetermorpha (or espeis, which I prefer) are typically active top schoolers, cories are bottom dwellers, and neons, cardinals, green fires, rummynose, and the like are typically middle to lower. I don't know if microrasboras or tetras are a good idea with a 6 inch fish, as they could easily be viewed as lunch. Or dinner. Late night snack. You get the idea. There's just so many options, that you can ask a dozen people, and potentially have some overlap, but have a pretty good array of different suggestions, but there's no guarantee that they're going to be suggestions *you* like. Time to view some threads, google, hit up online vendors, and scour the web for ideas, to see what you like, and once you have that kind of starting point, then we can chime in with experiences of certain species and compatibility issues.

If you could find one, a 30 gallon tank is 6" longer than a 29 gallon tank, yet only one gallon more of water. It would give you a few more choices stocking wise, and be better for a full sized gourami like gold, blue, opaline, or moonlight. Or even a male female pair of gouramis. Pearl gouramis only get to 4" and are a better fit for a 29 in my opinion. I would def paint or buy a background though, fish look amazing with a black bkgd. Plus as authmal said, it serves a practical purpose to hide cords. As for stocking a gourami/gourami pair would be a lovely centerpiece fish. The "usual" stock goes a center piece fish/pair, a mid h2o schooler-tetras, barbs, rasboras, livebearers- not a schooler but mid typically, a bottom fish/schooler- cory cats, loaches, sharks, plecos, shrimp and sometimes a top schooler- killifish, hatchets, danios. You obviously dont have to stick to that, but it helps when just starting out. :) If you fall in love with a fish your store doesn't carry ask if theyll special order for you :)
