I just picked up a 30g long with a pine cabinet and upon getting home I noticed a slight dip along part of the stand that lines the perimeter of the tank. It was evidently a knot in the wood.

It's very slight and probably wouldn't cause an issue - but I want to be absolutely sure. Naturally taking it back would be a hassle so I'd rather not if I don't have to.

Here are some pictures.

Also - will it be safe to keep the 30g tank on an upstairs floor?

Yes you can keep it on a 2nd floor with no problems at all. I only support my tanks (up to 120 gallons and glass only) directly under the corners, I can run a credit card under all my tanks except for the corners.

The dent in the wood is fine, wouldn't even make a difference. I personally am against keeping tanks upstairs because what if there is a leak when your not home, or a filter failure causing water to be everywhere, leaking through the wood and carpet causing mold and wood rot.

I wouldnt worry at all about where the knot was...not enough gap to cause any issues.

Also keeping a 30g on the second floor should be fine

I think that dip is no problem: it's too small to cause stress in the tank's structure. Also, I can't see a 30g being a problem on an upper floor. With stand, glass, rock, and water, you're talking 350-400 pounds? Unless the floor is old and decrepit in the first place, that's nothing. That said, I always try to place tanks along a load-bearing wall and situated across the floor beams, not parallel. Spreads the load that way.

Hey -- best advice I heard today!

Maybe I can convince the wife to let me get a 55 and upgrade from our 30.

Thanks,
JPS

We have a 55 upstairs..against a load bearing wall...I sleep well at night...nothing to worry about.

My issue is that it won't be against a load bearing wall. I have a feeling there may be a support beam nearby or underneath the area however.

I've kept my 32" TV and stereo system in this spot for many years. Those have a pretty large combined weight. Maybe a good 200-300 pounds.
