Filled my tank up and used used ammo lock to remove chlorine and chlormines about 5 days ago temp is about 78 no fish, this morning when i woke up the tank was cloudy which i thought was normal for a tank going through the cycle process even though i thought i would see cloudy water on day 2 or 3 so on my way home i stop to pick up some cheap fish to throw in there anyways i came home from work today and there was a grayish film build up on top of the water,
Anyone ever had this happen and what is it, is there something seriously wrong with my water.

Nitrous wastes can accumulate on top of the water and cause some kind of thin film in the water surface that may sufocate fry. Normaly, the water movement caused by a filter is enought to break it. Also, this can be prvented in aquariums by using the overflow type filters, that take the water from the surface instead than from a lower zone of the tank. In marine aquaria, it's the Protein Skimmer's job to eliminate such waste.

If you are seeing that, try taking it apart with a glass or any other container. If you were able to catch it with a net, then it's another thing.

I assume you are doing a fissless cycling. what kind of ammonia did you use? If it was nor puire ammonia, it can be the source of your problem.

Let us know.

hmm, well the only thing i have running on the tank now are 2 magnum 350 so i really dont have anything that breaks the surface of the water.

This will sound dumb but i didnt know there could be a Nitrous build up, i was familiar with Nitrates and Nitrites.

and it was a fishliss cycle untill today, i bought 4 convicts at .35 cents a piece, they seem to be doing ok but its the long term is what im worried about.

I took one of those white Whisper Filter Sleeves and got a bunch of it off the top, its on baking cookie sheet right now all clumped up in a pile, kind of looks like grout for tile floors

also noticed that this stuff is sticking to the insides of my tubes that my powerheads are hooked up to.

I'm really scared now. Are your filters new?

What I can think is of some kind of external contamination. My best advice would be to return the fish to the LFS, completly wash the entire tank and equipment and re-start again a fishless cycle.

hmm

don't really have anything in regard to your sludge, but I would say that if you were fishless cycling with ammonia and are now fishy cycling, I hope you did a water change before putting in the fish.

No all i did was fill the tank up with water, treat it with ammo lock thats suppose to counter chlorine then the guy at the fish store gave me some aquarium salt to put in my tank he told me about 4 tablespoons, and thats all i did, 5 days later of just letting the water filter i get that sludgy stuff

got 3 tanks in my house that i have setup and this is the first time ive ever seen this

You shoulkd re-start al over. Something wrong happened there.

Dicard water and wash all the equipment. Go to the noob section of this forum and read the CYCLING section completely. Then, restart all over. It's more work but at the end if you go on with that tank, you'll loose a lot.

Also, salt in a freshwater aquarium is not needed unless you are medicating for some parasites. Also, since you'll do a fishless cycle don't use ammolock. Just treat your water with a declorinator that can handle chlorine and chloramines (if necesary)

Hope this was help.-

Ammo lock is not the best thing to use on a regular basis to condition your water. It has a lot of chemicals in it that you don't really need. Try finding one such as prime, aquasafe, etc.
