okay i've been through several incarnations as a fish keeper. ideally I'd like to live in a human safe bubble right next to an active reef but I can't. and, my future fish keeping must be either terribly modest or bring home a bit of scratch.

so, trying to think of the best way to sew together a few dollars in the fish world.

upsize valuable specimens (eg. red tail cat, koi, etc) for resale?
breed feeders (eg. guppies, brine shrimp, etc)
cichlids (angels, discus??? - too much work?, really!)
corals? (i know nothing)

totally not looking to get rich, though I may go w/ a natural filtration system that'll feed my lettuce and keep said fish happy. figure I can rake in about $180/mo donating blood. That's pretty much my fish income target too.

Comments?

red tail cat, koi get very big and need lots of room to grow right. i think thats out of the question for most people.

breeding feeders will not make you any money after all the time you spend. they are a good place to learn the how to's. i would suggested them as starters. cheap and easy.

discus are a harder fish to keep. so i would think breeding them might also be harder.

if you go with angels make sure you get high quality ones people will want. your more likely to make money that way.

once you figure out what your doing and become good at it you can move on to more expensive fish. this is where you might make money. your going to need a lot of room for grow out tanks. its going to be a big investment. that might never pay off. there are people who make money breeding but a lot dont.

a better option might be plants. you dont need as many tanks and the set up cost might be lower. unless you have some massive system its going to be hard to make almost 200 bux a month. i dont know. maybe someone will say other wise.

No matter how much you earn, you will spend it on more tanks/fish.

Donating? dont you mean selling? if you donate...you give...they take other body fluids too.. may want to inquire about that...esp males. they need a certain fluid for study all the time..
