OK probably stickin my nose in where it doesn't belong, might get burned but worth it. I love our golden african cichlid! Why? She is beautiful and comes to the tank to 'visit' even if you don't feed her. OH yeah and she is one mean b*#@c. She is all alone in her tank, we learned the hard way... one albino cichlid (which was neater than her), two clown plecos, oh yeah and about a half a dozen snails... but she is holding her eggs in her mouth now and every time the cat comes to visit she spits the eggs out, charges the side of the tank and then sucks the eggs back up....

my vote: african cichlids...

oops :o ... my faux pas... golden cichlids would be my choice and yea there are a few different varieties.

Im kicking myself for replying in an ancient thread but:

By 'golden cichlid' do you mean Melanochromis auratus from lake Malawi?

I would not reccommend anyone to add these to thier tank unless you want them to endure a similar fate as yours... killing off everything else in the tank. I have a 90 gallon african cichlid tank and i would never add auratus to the mix. ;) They would do great in a large species-only tank though.

Nope... she is an African Butterfly... Anomalachromis thomasi. How stupid do I sound now. She was really territorial before (we've had her for about 4 years). Just noticed her first clutch of eggs and now she is certifiable. The cat won't even entertain her now.

Is there a male "anomalachromis thomasi" present?.. any males?

Nope. All by herself... the last cichlid commited suicide rather than share a tank with her. So yeah, the eggs are unfertalized.
