I have a Biorb that i got as a gift a long time ago and i was thinking of turning it into a nano tank, I was thinking do a sump for the filtration but then i don't know what to do about lights. I saw that there are halogen lights for sale for it but i dont know if that will work. I know alot about the fish and invert side but i am a noob at coral. :help:Is there a small light i can use so that i can put coral in my biorb? Thanks for the help.

The Biorb brand lights won't work for coral. Unfortunately, the Biorb is not so suitable for a SW nano due to its shape (and thus lack of gas exchange relative to a rectangular tank of the same volume). I'm not too well-versed on sumps, at least until I get my 50 gallon :), but I can't imagine how you would work out a sump with the Biorb.

If you really want to try this project, perhaps you could use a powerhead for circulation, and try using the Coralife 2x9W PC light. The mounting legs don't work w/ the 18W model, so I suspended mine above my 5.5 gallon tank. However, I warn you that 18W would be an absolute bare minimum, IMO, for even low light coral (as I believe that the Biorb is 8 gallons?). You could try a larger PC strip, but I think it would just hang over the sides of the Biorb.

My advice, if you really want a nano, is to go with a 5.5 gallon rectangular tank, or larger. It will save you many headaches, I am sure, and the tank would only cost you about $10. Given that you'll need to replace all the proprietary equipment anyway (corals don't like the bubbles that the Biorb pump-driven filter will generate), it won't cost much more at all.

Good luck!:)

That is an INSANE price for the Aquapod w/ HQI.:)

the 70W halide would really open up a lot of options for you as far as coral choices. HOWEVER- the bigger you choose to go, the easier it will be. That isn't to say that you can't start SW in a nano tank, just that it requires more patience, research, and effort. I started SW in a 2.5 gal pico reef (after 5 yrs FW experience) and it worked fine. You just have to pay a lot of attention to it.;)

ive been doing SW for 5ish years, i got a 55 gallon tank atm. Ive just never done coral because one of my first fish was a cowfish and he will eat anything i put in the tank. And btw when u say INSANE you mean good right? ive been wanting a nano for awhile now, and if its really that good maybe ill get it

I mean EXCELLENT. That's the best price I've ever seen for an Aquapod HQI.:) Others, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong... but if I weren't planning the 50 I'd go for it without a doubt. LOL

I've seen a BiOrb used as a nano in a local store. I laughed when I saw it and asked the clerks which one of them was "lucky" enough to get to scrape coraline off the insides of it. They rolled their eyes and said they wished I'd say that to the owner so he'd get what they'd been trying to tell him.

they got one of those magnate things for scraping algae that works with the curve. ive also found a 24 gal nano cube with a 64 w light for 200 bucks, what is the better buy?
