Hi,

I had bought a small red oranda today... but only after putting in my newly set tank i noticed tat it has a small red lump on its skin??? is there any problem??? it looks quite healthy and swimming well..... btw, one of my ryukin ( smaller than oranda...bought together ) has been chasing it continuously.... it doesn't seem to bite it or nip its tail.... what can be the problem? does it mean my oranda is sick??
I would really appreciate any help....
thanx

No, it's on it's body on the left side. I've taken a picture, but it's not tat good. It looks like a spot rather than lump. It's quite small and looks like red mole.

Could it be a small tumour starting? My girlfriends betta had a tumour and it was small.

If it is, there really isn't much that can be done. It could just be a mild injury that will clear up, or just an area that is changing color. I'd just make sure the water is perfect, for now, and keep an eye it.

If it's a tumor, is it contagious? what are the chances of it getting bigger? shall i return the fish to petsmart?

It's not contagious if it's a tumor. Only if by chance it is some kind of bacterial or parasite thing. I wouldn't assume the worst if the fish is acting fine. Goldies get bumps. I would watch for behavior signs of illness and make sure the water is perfect. If it gets worse or you're very worried about it you could treat with Prazi. It's pretty gentle, and I've read that some people treat all their new Goldies with it.

nah. its not contagious. i dont think its necesary to return the fish to petsmart.

chasing is propably breeding or getting-to-know-you behavior, and by newly set up do you mean like just a couple days ago or cycled, which takes a little time? at any rate, id test, test, test the water and maybe do a round of pimafix and melafix. if your tank isnt cycled get ready to do some daily h2o changes to counter some of the crazy swings in h2o with a good water conditioner. goldfish do get some lumps and bumps which i think comes with them being generally dirty, water fouling (but still my favorite) fish. best of luck, goldfish are generally quick on the mend.
