Hi
Do some research on water plants in your area . Many are illegal in mostly warm areas Waterlily comes in an incredible
variety so get types that fit into your area . You'll probably want hardy as the tropicals can't handle freezing.. hyacinth is fantastic as a nutient filter but is incrediblt invasive but easily harvested
I wouldn't use a substrate as you'll be amazed at how much debris collects in a short time .
Most fish are colored to be inconspicuous from the top including sunfish so are difficult to see. You could go with tropical live bearers such as platies /swords but will have to be brought in during winter.
A good choice might be Rosy red minnows stay small very active ,take the cold and the red varieties are rather colorful. What about the stream area any thoughts on planting??? Go for dwarf types and contain them so they can be thinned as necessary A good choice would be Louisianna Iris or dwarf lotus.
Careful with the layout of the stream amazing how quickly they can dry even with just evaporation!! Good luck!!! gary
