i want to start a small (5 gallon) tank. im in college and i might possibly be dorming next semester, so i want to be able to take it with me. i already have a betta so i wanted to try something different..i was thinking a dwarf puffer.
i know next to nothing about DPs so any help would be great!
would one be ok in a 5? plants? food? etc.

as I understand it, dps will tear up plants. one thing I would advise is to start breeding snails before picking one up. this way you get a good supply of small snails for your dp to munch on to keep it's teeth in check. I used to have a dp that died of overgrown teeth causing starvation.

I like the Dwarf Puffer idea. I saw some of them in my lfs and have had my eye on them ever since. I saw a video Dwarf Puffer had posted and they are very entertaining to watch, even in store.

What else would a Dwarf Puffer eat other than snails? Do they eat flakes or what? I actually thought about getting a Dwarf last night to put in my Cousins 5 gallon that he said I could have. But I didnt know what they ate for sure besides snails and I didnt want to spend $15 for a heater. This tank hasnt been cycled so if I started it tonight could I take gravel from my 10 gallon and put it in the 5?

Would they eat flakes?

Can crabs get ICH? They have them at my Walmart here and they are like the size of a quarter with one pincher but almost every tank has signs of ICH. So can they get ICH? If not would putting one in my tank put my tank at risk? I dont remember what kind they are but they are TINY.

what substrate would be best for them?
temp?
would one be okay if there were no plants (real or fake), and maybe just some rocks to hide in?
keep the advice coming! thank guys!

I've heard they do ok in planted tanks, you might want to try with fake at first to see how they react. I'm pretty sure they prefer sand since their scaleless fish. They do need to have snails fairly often to keep their beak from overgrowing. If that happens they can starve.
