Small tanks

males up to 1/4 inch??? man thats so small. they dont get eaten by the females?

I've got baby endlers !

I have 2 females and 2 males in my river tank.....and today I just noticed 3 little tikes darting around in there...3 is all I've seen so far...can't imagine how many the betta and ADFs have eaten...lol. I'm planning on putting some in my 20long planted with the 3 threadfin rainbows. The juvie rams are in there right now, but I'll soon have homes for them.

What a fun and interesting hobby..now if everything survives my trip to NC.....I'll be doing ok....

Congrats on your baby endler's!!!! Just wait . . . I started with a male and two females. The first time I had 2 babies surive. The second time I had 7 babies survive. The third time, well I can't count and I noticed I have two pregnant females. I am thinking I'll need to take some into the pet store to trade. Originally the trio was in my 2.5, now they reside in the 10G with some cherry shrimp.

I have a pair in my 2.5 nano with some amano shrimp. I planned to move all the endler's to the 10G but these two were elusive and I got tired of chasing them. We'll see if they have babies, they are (I think) the two original babies who survived.

Will be breaking down the tanks in the next two months. Not looking forward to that--we are moving to Minnesota and everything must go. I am bringing the betta, the toad, and the newts. I'm thinking of taking one container of plants and sneaking in the shrimp and a trio of endler's. They're small!! I'm sure my honda civic won't mind the extra animals, my car already has the aforementioned aquatic animals, the dog, a leopard gecko, and two cats! Somehow my hubby gets to drive his electronic equipment, much quieter!

Wow...I'm sure glad we're PARKED for the foreseeable future !!! I don't envy you at all....lol !

All the best in the move...BTW....couldn't find the babies this morning....lol.....mr betta looked quite plump and happy this am.... lol

nope most females are about 3/4 of an inch to an full inch. That is still way to small to eat the males. They do not even eat the fry. they are by far some of the best fish to own.

Hey Jackie, let me know, and you can come by and visit my zoo when hit it this way. :D And good luck in the move. I do not envy you one bit.

What are your guys views on having small corys in a 5 gallon tank? I found a deal for a 5 gallon tank getting the whole setup for about $35 and plan to stock it with endler's and the Heterandria Formosa. I think that three small corys would round out the tank very nicely.

I personnally feel that 5 is just to small for cories. If you have your heart set on some though I would go with the Dwarf Cories, they are roughly the size of Heterandria Formosa. Very small fish and prefer to be in schools. I would do a heavy plant tank on this though and careful on the filter you use. These are all tiny fish and do not like strong filters. the fish tend to get sucked up in them. I am currently working on a 5 gallon setup for a plant tank that I intend on using for the Dwarf livebearer.

tricksterpup,

I believe that this is the fish that you were referring to: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/callicht/corydora/283_F.PHP

You are right this is the perfect fish for the tank, and i remember seeing these guys sharing a tank with some tetras at my lfs. How many do you think would be appropriate?

I am also unsure on the numbers of endler's and Heterandria Formosa.

My guess would be 3-5 each of the livebearers and 3 pygmy cories.

Suggestions on where the stocking levels could be increased/decreased?

Thanks to all that have contributed to this topic - Jighead

Ok since these guys are tiny, I would with about 6-7 of these guys (they are a schooler) with just as many hets for a 5 gallon, as long as you do regular weekly water changes.
As may notice, I made no mention of Endlers here. I keep mine in a 15 gallon tank, so I prefer to keep these guys in a larger tank, 10 gallons and up. Now if you did a 10 gallon instead you could go with a trio of endlers and 15 hets and 10 dwarf cories. But it would be best in a heavy planted tank. I would setup the tank minus the fish first, get your plants growning and then slowly add them. I would go with the Hets first and then slowly add the cories and then the endlers. Remember to use a QT tank for your fish.
