Setting up a mid-size tank for small fw Texas natives. I'd like to drill the tank and build a sump (mostly because I've never done it).

Was looking at a 45 to 55 gallon, but that doesn't leave room underneath for a sump (made from a smaller aquarium). Really don't want to go much bigger (btdt).

30 or 40 breeder are the smallest standard sizes that are 18" wide, which is about the only next step up from 12" wide tanks (although there's sometimes an inch or so discrepancy depending on how the measurement was done).

I'm assuming by "standard" you're not interested in bowfront, hex, etc. tanks?

Ditto. 30B or 40B have the same 18x36 footprint, 40 is taller and usually easier to find. Petco usually has the 40B for $40 a few times a year.

You could always use an Aqueon 13 or 16 gallon widescreen as a sump underneath a 40 or 55 gallon. Those tanks are only 8" wide and are either 24" or 30" long.

Unfortunately they are only sold as kits and not as the tanks alone. So unless you find one on Craigslist you will have to shell out for the kit.

You could always just use a double stand and make the sump same size.

According to Aqueon's weights/measures chart, the smallest standard sized tank with a ~12" front to back would be a 20L or 20H. There's also some other odd-balls like 15g, 25g and 30g listed. 29g and 37g would also have the ~12" depth.

EDIT-- I missed the greater than sign.. Yep, 30B or 40B for the ~18" front/back.
