Smallest Turtle?

stinkpots are cute, small, and not too expensive. They are rather undemanding as turtles go. We want one, but they arent legal in Maine (like pretty much any animal you might want for a pet, sigh). Good luck finding your prefect turtle mate!

are soft shell turtles truly completely aquatic? How big do they get?

Yes they are truly aquatic. Sometimes hatchlings will bask but that's about it. Depending on the sex and species, most if not all softshell species get BIG! Males usually only approach half the size of the females though. They have nasty dispositions and need lots of room to swim around. All in all they make very bad first turtles.

Vicious_fish my trachemys wouldn't use the basking pot the first year they used it later

That's very odd. Usually the younger a turtle is the hard it is for it to equalize it's body temperature with the water so they bask more often. Was the basking light far from your sliders basking spot?

Charney- Softshells are not completely aquatic- they like to get out of the water and bask. There are quite a few species of softshells, but even the smallest (like smooth softshells and some of the African softshells) get up to a foot or more in carapace length; some of the other species are giants, approaching sea turtle dimensions. Like WWG said, softshells are not good turtles for beginners.

Bellazeus- I would add to the chorus and recommend a Sternotherus or Kinosternon. I have two stinkpots (S. odoratus), a loggerhead musk (S. minor minor), and a stripeneck musk (S. m. peltifer); they are all attractive, alert, and fairly active turtles. They took right away to floating turtle pellets, and also enjoy nightcrawlers. The stinkpots eat dead feeder fish, and the loggerhead eats snails; all of them are too lazy to pursue live fish, and there are currently three comets, two southern red-bellied dace, a mosquitofish, and two fantail darters keeping the two S. minor company. They require far less space than painteds, maps, or sliders.

no it wasn't far. they just didn't get out of the water as much as they do now.Be careful with stinkpots or mud if you get an adult males can be vicious with other males
