are soft shell turtles truly completely aquatic? How big do they get?
Charney- Softshells are not completely aquatic- they like to get out of the water and bask. There are quite a few species of softshells, but even the smallest (like smooth softshells and some of the African softshells) get up to a foot or more in carapace length; some of the other species are giants, approaching sea turtle dimensions. Like WWG said, softshells are not good turtles for beginners.
Bellazeus- I would add to the chorus and recommend a
Sternotherus or
Kinosternon. I have two stinkpots (
S. odoratus), a loggerhead musk (
S. minor minor), and a stripeneck musk (
S. m. peltifer); they are all attractive, alert, and fairly active turtles. They took right away to floating turtle pellets, and also enjoy nightcrawlers. The stinkpots eat dead feeder fish, and the loggerhead eats snails; all of them are too lazy to pursue live fish, and there are currently three comets, two southern red-bellied dace, a mosquitofish, and two fantail darters keeping the two
S. minor company. They require far less space than painteds, maps, or sliders.
