I added 17 pounds of Fuji rock to my new start-up 25g tank today.
It smells like Old Orchard Beach on a hot day..salty and a bit like old rotting seaweed. Is this the norm?

That means that its not cured live rock. You are gonna have a heavy cycle. Probably looking at at least one month of cycle.

Sorry, but the good thing is that if you do some water changes to try and keep ammonia down you will have a lot of hitchhikers.

Haha I was at Old Orchard Beach today and parts of it did smell!! You must have got your rock from Port City Reef???

LOL. The rock has actually been sitting in the bins at my LFS for 2 weeks now. I can't see any hitchikers, I rinsed it in salinated water first. I think my LFS has already scavanged the rock for any goodies. Old Orchard is a nice place, I'm going back in August.
