Smelly water

then you've got to get cycled! DONT NOT PUT FISH IN!!! in tel the water does not smell! sorry dident know it wasent cycled.

The gravel is probably the source. My dad used to just take the gravel out and throw it in a bucket and call it good. Made for a funky smell when i went to use it later. Anyways, water changes are probably the best bet as plah said.

The fish are already in; I really had to take them. Again, I took them from a friend who os moving, and my original plan was to have it cycled, but had some problems building the stand and with a broken filter.. and then of course with the smelly gravel. I posted a bit earlier about that and was basically assured the fish would do OK if I put in some plants and filter media from established tanks and monitored ammonia levels.
The tank was much less smelly by the time I put the fish in. The fish themselves seem happy, eagerly exploring all their little caves and hiding places and chasing each other around. I've never had such active, busy little fish.
