snail food question

You really don't have to panic about snails starving to death from a total lack of food in your tank. They will be the last to die – about 25 years after everything else...

Actually its not at all uncommon to have an apple snail die of starvation, well before fish, as people often do not realize that they need to be fed specifically, just like any other intentional addition to your tank. There is a misconception that they can survive on algae alone similar to misconceptions that cories will just scavenge leftover food from the bottom.

None of mine ever have – although I feed lots of veggies every day, so they don't get the chance. Last year I emptied out an old tank and dumped it at the end of the garden, until I could find a use for it. It quickly filled up with rainwater. I must have missed a few baby apples, because when I went back 6 months later, there were several quite large, very healthy-looking golden apple snails inside – god knows how many must have climbed out and died, as there was no top on it...
